CRS History in Sudan

CRS has supported relief and development programs in Sudan since the end of the first major civil war in 1971 when the agency helped to resettle internally displaced Sudanese. Expanded humanitarian interventions began in 1989 when CRS Sudan became a pioneer member of Operation Lifeline Sudan. In the wake of the Darfur crisis, CRS opened a field office in El Geneina, West Darfur in May 2004.

CRS runs its North Sudan Program from its main offices in Khartoum and has a field office in El Geneina (West Darfur). The main office for South Sudan is in Juba, with logistics offices in Lokichoggio, Mombassa and Nairobi, Kenya. CRS operates 11 field offices in the states of western and eastern Equatoria, and in the Lakes region of Bahr el Ghazal. CRS Sudan maintains logistical support offices in Uganda in Arua, Kitgum, Gulu and Kampala. CRS Sudan employs approximately 250 staff from nine different countries.
